How to get there

Gökçeada is reached by ferry from Kabatepe harbour near Eceabat and from Çanakkale. Ferry times vary with the season and the weather, so it is important to check in advance. On the island, a car or bicycle makes travel between the villages easier.

The ferry crossing is short, but in summer and holiday periods vehicle queues can grow long, so choosing an early departure makes things easier. Public transport on the island is limited, which is why it helps to arrange a car or bicycle in advance for moving between the villages and coves. Distances are modest, but the roads climb and wind through the hills.

When to visit

Late spring and summer are the best seasons for the sea and outdoor activities, and summer is ideal for windsurfing. In spring and autumn the island is quieter; the air can turn cool and the wind can strengthen.

Much of Gökçeada’s appeal comes from its calm and its protected nature. Leaving no trace in the coves and on the beaches, carrying litter back out and respecting the local rhythm of life all matter for keeping the island’s character. Some villages are small and quiet; it is worth honouring that stillness when visiting.
