Mount Tahtalı

Why it is worth visiting

Mount Tahtalı, rising abruptly from the coast to a 2,365-metre summit, overlooks the Kemer shore. Known in antiquity as Olympos, the mountain offers a way to reach the summit from sea level in a very short time, making it the region’s most practical high point for anyone wanting to combine sea and mountain in a single day.

Geography and national park

The mountain lies within the Beydağları Coastal National Park, declared a national park in 1972. The park covers a wide area southwest of Antalya and holds one of the highest points of the Beydağları range that runs along the coast. That height is what lets you see the whole coastline from the summit.

The cable car

The ascent is made by a cable-car line starting from the valley station at about 726 metres. The line, roughly 4,359 metres long, carries visitors to the summit station at 2,365 metres in about ten minutes. This short passage from sea to summit is the most distinctive experience the mountain offers.

Weather at the summit and preparation

The air at the summit is noticeably colder than on the coast; even in summer it is worth taking a warm layer. The clarity of the view depends on the weather: on clear days the summit gives a view of the Mediterranean coast, Olympos, Çıralı, Kemer and Phaselis, and on very clear days as far as Antalya. Since mist can close the view, choosing a clear day where possible directly affects the experience.

Activities

With its position running from the sea to the summit, Tahtalı is also favoured for paragliding, run in the area by professional operators. The flight down toward the coast is one way to see the mountain’s view from a different angle.

Planning a visit

What shapes the experience on Tahtalı most is the weather. When clouds close over the summit, the view largely disappears, so choosing a clear, still day where possible makes a direct difference. Because cable-car services and entry conditions can change with the season and the weather, it is worth getting current information before setting out. At the summit the temperature drops noticeably from the coast; a light jacket or windbreaker helps even in summer. The time spent up top can be kept short, but setting aside a little time to take in the 360-degree view quietly rounds out the experience.

Nearby

At the foot of the mountain, Çıralı and ancient Olympos are neighbouring stops that bring sea and history together in the same area. Kemer is the nearest base to the cable car and a good starting point for rounding out the day.
